AUXILIARY UNIT HONORED AT ANNUAL STATE CONVENTION

Walthall County Unit 56 of the American Legion Auxiliary in Tylertown was awarded
numerous awards and citations at the State Convention July 13-15 in Corinth.  Unit
President Paula Boyd McGinnis and members Angela Kilcrease, Johnnie Harvey and
Sandy Day represented the Walthall County unit.
The unit was awarded second place Unit of the Year in its membership category of
50-100 members for its activities and achievements during 2006-07.   In addition, the
unit received first place for its scrapbook and press book.
“Our first place award for press book is due in great part by the great coverage of
our events and activities throughout the year from The Tylertown Times,” Kilcrease
said.  “This is as much their award as it is ours.”
Other awards included certificates of appreciation for and participation in the
Auxiliary programs of Americanism, Emergency Fund, Past President’s Parley, Girls
State, Cavalcade of Memories, Children and Youth, Education, Leadership, Legislative,
National Security, Public Relations, and Poppy.
For its membership achievements, Unit 56 received a national citation for reaching
104 percent membership goal in 2006-07—the first unit in the state to reach its goal—
and a certificate of commendation from 7th District President Nellie Dottery of Natchez
for membership and activities.
Kilcrease was nominated and elected to the state office of Department 2nd Vice
President, having served as Department Historian in 2006-07.  Her responsibilities in
her new position will include junior membership in Mississippi.  She was also elected
as a state delegate to the National Convention in Reno, Nev., in August.
The American Legion Auxiliary is the largest patriotic women’s service organization
in the world, with nearly one million members. Affiliated with The American Legion, the
Auxiliary is a veterans’ service organization with members in nearly 10,000 American
communities. The organization sponsors volunteer programs on the national and local
levels, focusing on three major areas: veterans, young people and the community.
Mississippi has 86 units, with more than 5,500 members statewide.
